Best Turkish Period Dramas: 8 Series Set in the Past

Eight Turkish period dramas, from the Ottoman court to 1970s Istanbul, arranged by era so you can pick your century.

Turkey's history is a gift to television writers: an empire that lasted six centuries, a war of independence, a city that has been a crossroads for 2,000 years. Period dramas are a major part of the industry, and some of them have been watched by audiences far beyond Turkey. The best ones are not history lessons. They use a past setting to tell stories about power, love and loyalty with higher stakes.

Below are eight period series arranged by era, from the Ottoman court to the 1970s. A note on accuracy: these are dramas, not documentaries. Characters are often invented and events are compressed, so treat them as a way into a period, not a record of it. Episode counts refer to the original Turkish broadcast.

The Ottoman world

1. Diriliş: Ertuğrul

2014 to 2019 · TRT 1 · 150 episodes over five seasons

Set in the 13th century, it follows Ertuğrul, the father of Osman, who founded the Ottoman dynasty, as he leads his tribe through war, rival leaders and shifting alliances. It is the most action-heavy series here, with battles, horseback chases and a large ensemble. The original episodes ran from about 105 to 165 minutes, though streaming versions are edited to roughly 45 minutes, which is why you may see much higher episode counts on some platforms. Engin Altan Düzyatan and Esra Bilgiç lead the cast.

Why it works: it has a clear hero, clear stakes and a lot of momentum. It was especially popular in Pakistan, where it was broadcast in Urdu, but it has also drawn some political controversy, so you may see it discussed in non-entertainment contexts.

2. Magnificent Century (Muhteşem Yüzyıl)

2011 to 2014 · Show TV, then Star TV · 139 episodes over four seasons

The story of Suleiman the Magnificent and Hürrem, the woman who rose from the harem to become his wife and one of the most powerful figures of the empire. The series is about court politics as much as romance: succession, betrayal, and the pressure of ruling. It has reportedly been broadcast in more than 50 countries. Halit Ergenç and Meryem Uzerli played the central couple, with Okan Yalabık and Vahide Gördüm in the supporting cast.

Why it works: if you like The Tudors or Game of Thrones-style palace scheming, this is the Turkish equivalent. Please note that the series took significant dramatic liberties and attracted public criticism in Turkey for its portrayal of the sultan.

Empire in decline, a nation in birth

3. Wounded Love (Vatanım Sensin)

2016 to 2018 · Kanal D · 59 episodes over two seasons

A love story set in the last years of the Ottoman Empire and the War of Independence, with much of the action in Izmir under Greek occupation. The central couple, Cevdet and Azize, are separated by war and the choices it forces on them. Halit Ergenç and Bergüzar Korel star, with Onur Saylak in the cast.

Why it works: it puts a romance inside one of the most important periods in modern Turkish history, so you get emotion and context together.

4. Midnight at the Pera Palace

Netflix · 2022 and 2024 · 16 episodes over two seasons

A modern journalist, Esra, researching the history of the Pera Palace Hotel, finds a hidden room and is transported to 1919. She is mistaken for someone else and gets pulled into a plot to harm Mustafa Kemal, the future founder of the Turkish Republic. It is based on a non-fiction book about the hotel by Charles King. Hazal Kaya, Tansu Biçer and Selahattin Paşalı lead.

Why it works: the time-travel hook makes it an easy entry point for viewers who are not familiar with Turkish history, and at 16 episodes it is a manageable length.

5. Portrait of a Scandalous Family

NOW · one season

Based on the real story of the Şakir Paşa family, an Ottoman dynasty whose members include the writer Cevat Şakir, known as "The Fisherman of Halicarnassus," and his artistic sisters. The story begins in 1911 with a scandal that splits the family. Vahide Gördüm is part of the cast. Because the series was reportedly pulled from broadcast, treat it as a possibly unfinished story and check its page before you start.

Why it works: it is an unusual choice for fans of art and literary history, because it centers on real cultural figures.

6. Aziz

Show TV · 2021 to 2022 · 28 episodes

A series set in Antakya during the period of French occupation, following Aziz Payidar. Murat Yıldırım and Simay Barlas lead the cast. It was not renewed after its first season, so it is more of a single-story watch.

Why it works: the regional setting is unusual, and Antakya's mixed culture gives it a different look from the Istanbul-set series on this list.

Modern history

7. The Museum of Innocence (Masumiyet Müzesi)

Netflix · 2026 · 9 episodes

An adaptation of Orhan Pamuk's novel, set in Istanbul between 1975 and 1984. Kemal, from a wealthy family, falls in love with a distant relative, Füsun, and the story follows his obsession over years. Selahattin Paşalı and Eylül Kandemir star.

Why it works: it is the most literary entry here and a good choice for fans of slow, reflective storytelling. Readers of the novel will want to compare.

8. Karadayı

2012 to 2015 · ATV · 115 episodes over three seasons

Set in 1970s Istanbul, Mahir Kara goes undercover as a trainee lawyer in order to free his father from a death sentence, and falls in love with the judge. It won several Golden Butterfly awards and was nominated for an International Emmy in 2014. Kenan İmirzalıoğlu and Bergüzar Korel star.

Why it works: it blends a period setting with an old-fashioned romance and a legal thriller, and the retro look is a big part of its appeal.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Turkish historical drama?

It depends on what you like. Magnificent Century is best known for palace intrigue, while Diriliş: Ertuğrul is the pick for action.

Are Turkish period dramas historically accurate?

Not completely. They are dramas that use real events as a setting, and they add invented characters and compress timelines. Use them as an introduction, not as a source.

Which period drama is the shortest?

The Museum of Innocence has 9 episodes and Midnight at the Pera Palace has 16 across two seasons.

Why do some period dramas have different episode counts online?

Streaming platforms often cut long Turkish episodes into shorter ones, which raises the episode count. This guide uses the original Turkish broadcast figures.

Do I need to know Turkish history to enjoy them?

No. Most series explain the context as they go, and Midnight at the Pera Palace is especially friendly to newcomers.
