Best Turkish Family Dramas: 8 Heartfelt Series

Eight Turkish family dramas about siblings, parents and the ties that hold households together.

Family sits at the center of Turkish storytelling. Even in a romance or a thriller, parents, siblings and in-laws shape every decision, and a big family dinner is often where the plot turns. Some series go further and make the family itself the story: a sister raising her siblings, a father defending his daughter, or two households that cannot stop colliding.

The eight series below all put family first, and they vary a lot in mood. We have grouped them by the type of family story they tell, and we mention tone so you know whether you are in for a good cry. Episode counts refer to the original Turkish broadcast.

Siblings and the big household

1. Our Story (Bizim Hikaye)

2017 to 2019 · 70 episodes over two seasons

Filiz, the eldest of six siblings, has raised her brothers and sisters since their mother left, and she manages the household on very little with an unreliable father. Adapted from the British series Shameless, it mixes humor with real struggle. Hazal Kaya and Burak Deniz star.

Why it works: the ensemble is large and lovable, and the series treats hardship with humor instead of pity.

2. Asi

2007 to 2009 · Kanal D · 71 episodes over two seasons

Set in a rural part of Antakya, it follows Asi, a young woman whose family is caught up in a conflict with another, and Demir, a man with a powerful role in the area. Murat Yıldırım plays Demir, in a cast that includes Çetin Tekindor. It is an older series, so the pace is slower than you may be used to.

Why it works: it is a good example of the classic Turkish tale of family honor and love across a divide.

3. Hold My Hand (Elimi Bırakma)

2018 to 2019 · TRT 1 · two seasons

After her father dies, Azra is sent away by her stepmother along with her autistic brother, and she meets Cenk, a young man hiding his own guilt. It is an adaptation of the Korean drama Shining Inheritance. Alina Boz and Alp Navruz lead the cast.

Why it works: it handles family and healing with a hopeful tone, and the sibling bond is the emotional core.

Parents and children

4. For My Daughters (Kızlarım İçin)

2017 to 2018 · Kanal D · 13 episodes

A poor father of five daughters takes the blame when one of them accidentally kills her mother, and has to hold the family together while hiding what happened. Fikret Kuşkan, Tuvana Türkay and Elifcan Ongurlar star.

Why it works: with only 13 episodes, it is the quickest family drama here, so it suits viewers who want a moving story without a big time commitment.

5. My Daughter (Kızım)

2018 to 2019 · TV8 · 34 episodes

An eight-year-old girl with a rare genetic disease ends up in the care of an irresponsible ex-convict, and the two slowly form a bond. Buğra Gülsoy and Beren Gökyıldız lead.

Why it works: it is a tearjerker, built around the relationship between a father figure and a child. Keep tissues nearby, and note that the illness storyline can be heavy.

Marriage, tradition and secrets

6. Evermore (İstanbullu Gelin)

2017 to 2019 · Star TV · 87 episodes over three seasons

A story about a woman who marries into a new family and has to find her place within it, with in-laws, tradition and old secrets shaping her new life. It was nominated for an International Emmy for Best Telenovela in 2018, and it has been remade in several countries, including Lebanon, India and Mexico. Aslı Enver and Özcan Deniz star.

Why it works: it handles the Turkish tradition of the extended family with warmth, and it is also a favorite among viewers who like gentle, hopeful dramas.

7. Sıla

2006 to 2008 · ATV · 79 episodes over three seasons

Set between Istanbul and Mardin, it is a classic story of love complicated by tradition and family expectations. Cansu Dere and Mehmet Akif Alakurt star.

Why it works: it is one of the older series on this list, and fans of the classic style enjoy its slower, more atmospheric pace.

8. Broken Pieces (Paramparça)

2014 to 2017 · Star TV · 97 episodes over three seasons

An intense drama about two families whose lives are bound together by past events and secrets, with the story moving across years. Nurgül Yeşilçay, Erkan Petekkaya and Ebru Özkan lead the cast.

Why it works: it is the twistiest series here, and a good pick for viewers who like their family drama with a mystery.
